What is Sexual Health?
We've all heard the term, but what exactly does that mean?
Sexual Wellness
Sex is an often relative, familiar term that everyone knows, but is often feared. Sexual health then comes charged with mixed messages and understanding. Among other things, healthy sex impacts heart health, lowers blood pressure, increases immunity, lowers prostate cancer, relieves stress, and improves sleep. For most people when things don’t work as expected they think it is the physical aspect that needs to be addressed. Sexual health goes beyond the physical act and bodily functions into the realm of the mind and how it contributes and reacts to it. Our mind is powerful enough to both help and hinder our sexuality and it is important to for us to understand and be able to address this as a part of our overall health.
Here are some basic tips for fulfilling and healthy sex:
COMMUNICATE
Be open with your partner about what you want, what is comfortable, uncomfortable, and even your fantasies!
Talk about and resolve what to do when your desires (i.e. likes, dislikes, frequency, etc) don’t match
DON’T be intimate unless you actually want to
Explore the possibility of couples therapy or sex therapy if there are sexual issues that don’t seem to be resolved. (**Hint: this is where Hinman Counseling Services can help!)
