Feeling down? Overcome with Gratitude

Moving beyond survival mode

GRATITUDE

Our brains are wired and act on survival. The things we remember and focus on the most are the negative things that can hurt us. We do this so we are better able to protect ourselves for the next time something similar happens. That’s why it is necessary to be intentional in developing a positive mindset. We want to do more than survive, we want to live, and beyond that to have a full life! Gratitude is one of the best ways to begin overcoming survival mode and to grow more positive mindset.

Gratitude has been shown to reduce stress, improve sleep, and help relationships. It leads to attentiveness, determination, energy and managing situations with a growth mindset. Due to these reasons it has been found to reduce the risk of mental health disorders, such as major depression, generalized anxiety disorder and drug abuse and even helps with resilience in overcoming trauma.

Here are some tips to begin practicing gratitude:

  1. The nightly “Three Blessings” Exercise: Before going to sleep write down three positive things (big or small) that happened during the day and reflect on why they happened. You can use these prompts to get you started:

    • I’m grateful for three things I hear/see/smell/touch or feel/taste:

    • I’m grateful for these three color (e.g.) blue things:

    • I’m grateful for these three animals/birds:

    • I’m grateful for these three people in my life (e.g. friends/teachers/family members/coworkers/bosses):

    • I’m grateful for these three things in my home:

  2. A Gratitude Letter/email/text/post: Write a heartfelt Thank You to someone to whom you are grateful, but who you may not have properly thanked. Describe your gratitude giving specific details and the impact that their actions have had on your life. Whether or not you send it is irrelevant as just writing it already has a positive impact on you.
