Can therapy be a quick fix?
I know for some of us when we imagine going to therapy, we feel it's going to be a “quick fix.” Maybe you're thinking, “I’ll come in, they’ll tell me what’s wrong, and then it'll get fixed.” We are all searching for a magic wand that makes all our problems instantly disappear. Maybe it's because we live in a world where everything is being created to be instant, painless, and takes little to no effort.
The thing about magic wands is that they steal away from you an opportunity to build a better you. It robs of an experience that could be shared with someone else fighting the same beast. What’s holding you back from putting in that effort? Don't give up as long as you have breath in your lungs. Don't give in to the cheaply bought success by a magic wand, but one built by your own two hands, in which your life’s foundation will be much stronger.
Here are some tips to help you on your therapist search:
1. Have an idea of what you would like to work on. The goals you set for therapy are done in collaboration with your therapist and it helps to have an idea of what you are looking for.
2. Look deeper into your insurance plan and finances. Therapy can be covered through your health insurance, however, what is covered depends on your individual plan, co-pays, deductibles and whether your therapist is in-network. You can ask your insurance about this.
3. Ask those around you. Ask trusted friends, family, colleagues, or your primary doctor if they have any recommendations.
4. Look for community resources. It is likely that there are alternative low to no cost options for therapy in your community. If you are a college student you can look for the counseling center in your school. Employers sometimes offer employee assistance programs (EAP) that offer counseling. There is also various types of group therapy that is offered through a local advocacy organization and faith based treatments.
5. Look for reliable online databases. You can search “counseling near me” on any search engine and find possible options.
6. In-person vs. online therapy. Many insurance companies now cover online therapy sessions. Success with online therapy depends on your preference. You will need to consider your internet connection stability, availability of a private space, your phone, computer, tablet’s capacity, etc. Ask your therapist about your options!
